Places to Stay in Tappahannock The Essex Inn The Essex Inn is Tappahannock's most elegant "Country Inn" accommodation and is located at the corner of Water Lane and Duke Street, across the street from the St. Margaret's campus and ideal for visiting parents and families. The Roane-Wright-Trible House as it is also known, is a Georgian mansion built about 1850 by Dr. Lawrence Roane and an excellent example of Greek revival architecture. It has a long and varied history and is even said to have played several interesting roles in the Civil War.
The Inn has been carefully and authentically restored to its original grandeur and has been furnished with period antiques, reproductions, and family heirlooms including a baby grand piano. The main floor features five unique chandeliers all of which have a history of their own. There are two common rooms to relax in, the music room and the library complete with books, games, puzzles and fireplace. Wi-Fi is available throughout the main house and the “Quarters.” A screened in porch and a private brick courtyard provide outdoor relaxation and smoking facilities. There are 8 guest rooms, four in the main house and four suites in the “Quarters”. They are all equipped with cable TV, individually controlled air conditioning and heat, hair dryers, irons, smooth-as-silk ironed sheets, plenty of oversized soft towels, bathrobes and our custom amenities. The four bedrooms in the Main House all feature four-posted beds (some queen, some king) custom made from wood salvaged from piers made of 300-year-old Cyprus trees and have their own private en suite bathrooms. Most have working gas fireplaces. The TV's in the main house have DVD players. DSL and WI-FI are available in all four bedrooms.
The "Quarters" is a separate building that was once used as the servants' quarters. It features 4 suites that can sleep up to 3 guests each. Each suite has a living room, bedroom, full kitchen, and bathroom. Two of the suites have gas fireplaces. Some of the TVs in the quarters have VCRs and some have DVD players. DSL is available in two of the suites, and WI-FI is available in all of the suites.A full three-course gourmet breakfast is served in the breakfast room. Guests staying in the “Quarters” have the option of having an extended continental breakfast delivered to their suite. All guests have full access to The Butler's pantry, which includes a beer tap, refrigerator, microwave and a full array of snacks. A screened in porch and a private brick courtyard provide outdoor relaxation and smoking facilities. Rates range from $125-$150 and include a full three course gourmet breakfast. A two night minimum stay is required on the weekends. Innkeepers Reeves and Melodie Pogue will be happy to assist both new and old parents of St. Margaret’s in planning their trip to Tappahannock.
