July 21, 1999: LLOYD'S ANNOUNCE BABY KENDALL'S BIRTH
Lucia and Marshall Lloyd joyfully announce the birth of their daughter Kendall Angela, on June 14, 1999. Kendall tipped the scales at 7 lbs. 6 oz.; 20 1/2 inches in length.
July 20, 1999: CATHY BOYD JETS TO JAPAN
Later this month, Cathy Boyd will leave Tappahannock to continue doing something she loves: teaching. Cathy was selected by the Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) Program for a one-year Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) position in a medium-size town about a 3 hour subway ride outside Tokyo, Japan, a setting wholly different from the serenity of St. Margaret's School, her high school alma mater and place of residence the past two years where she has also worked.
July 19, 1999: 5K RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER RUN/WALK & CRAFTS FESTIVAL
St. Margaret's Alumnae Association will hold a 5-kilometer run/walk in conjunction with the school's Fall Parents' Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 9. Starting and finishing by the SMS Hall front steps, the scenic 3.1 mile course winds through residential streets passing historic homes alongside the Rappahannock River. In addition, there will be a Water Lane Dash for kids and adults who wish to opt for a shorter distance.
June 23, 1999: SMS K.I.D.S. DAY CAMP
Enroll your youngster into St. Margaret's Kick Into Discovery Summer Camp. K.I.D.S., in its seventh year, promises to deliver loads of fun and challenging activities this summer to children ages six to twelve.
June 1, 1999: FACULTY TOP STUDENTS, 5 - 4
St. Margaret's faculty all-star team came up with a late-inning charge in the bottom of the fifth to top the students 5 - 4 in a good-spirited softball game last Thursday afternoon, May 27 at Essex County Little League Field in Tappahannock.May 25, 1999: SMS ANNOUNCES NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTEES
14 St. Margaret's students were recently inducted into The National Honor Society, an academic honor society whose purpose is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in secondary school students.May 24, 1999: JV SCOTTIES PROUD OF SEASON DESPITE LOSING RECORD
According to coaches Bill and Michelle Ellis of Dunnsville, other than one Watermelon picnic and several "coaches treat" snack days on record, the 12 girls on this year's inaugural squad devoted themselves to hard work rather than leisure this season, and it paid off.May 15, 1999: MARSHALL LLOYD EARNS DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE HONORS
On Saturday, May 15, Latin teacher Marshall Davies Lloyd received an M.A. in Liberal Studies from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg. Lloyd won both of two high achievement awards given in the school's graduate program and maintained a 3.9 GPA.May 14, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S CLASS OF 1999 PLANS FOR COLLEGE
SMS Class of 1999 is one of the most diverse in years according to college counselor Mollie Conklin, of Warsaw. Conklin is quite pleased with this year's list of colleges and universities that her students will attend this fall.May 13, 1999: 1999-2000 PEER LEADERS SELECTED
St. Margaret's recently announced 31 students chosen for peer leader positions for the 1999 - 2000 school year. Those positions include peer leaders, boarding and day student prefects, student government association (SGA), and honor council.May 3, 1999: ROGERS UNDEFEATED, LEADS TENNIS TEAM
Undefeated for St. Margaret's in singles and doubles through nine matches, senior Roz Rogers is showing the league and her teammates how it's done.May 1, 1999: KOSOVO CAR WASH A SUCCESS
On Friday, April 30, a group of fifteen St. Margaret's students and two faculty sponsors, were all about fun; 27 cars were washed and over $150 in proceeds went to benefit the children of Kosovo.April 29, 1999: SMS JOINS COMMUNITY TO RECOGNIZE CHILD ABUSE
On Wednesday, April 28, St. Margaret's lead community service group Basic Needs held a special chapel service in recognition of child abuse prevention month.April 27, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S HONORS COMMUNITY
On Monday, April 26 at high noon, St. Margaret's held a one-hour luncheon to honor community supporters of the school and its mission.April 21, 1999: CLASS OF 2003 PLANS CAR WASH GOAL IS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR KOSOVAR CHILDREN
St. Margaret's Class of 2003 (a.k.a the eighth graders) just announced plans for a car wash fundraiser on Friday, April 30, from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.,at Gilchrist field off Virginia Street near St. Margaret's campus in Tappahannock. All proceeds will go to UNICEF to benefit the children of Kosovo.April 20, 1999: LESLEY NEWMAN, LOVINGLY, SPORTS NEW HAIRDO
St. Margaret's senior Lesley Newman recently cut off 10" of her brown, curly hair as a charitable donation for Locks of Love, a Fort Lauderdale-based nonprofit organization which provides quality hair prosthetics for children under the age of eighteen who are afflicted with medical hair loss.April 18, 1999: ST. Hardworking, dedicated, and master of the early morning practice, St. Margaret's 1999 crew team did what everyone on this year's inaugural team anticipated on Saturday, April 17, they challenged for the lead in each of the school's three races at Mathews High School Regatta-and one deserving team, even won.April 16, 1999: SCOTTIES RAIN ON ST. In recognition of National Student-Athlete Day, on Wednesday, April, 7th, St. Margaret's athletic director Sue Saunders presented eleven students a National Student-Athlete Day award certificate during morning announcements, for excellence in academics, athletics, and community service.April 10, 1999: TOP DOG JV SCOTTIES DOWN COLLEGIATE 10 - 8 IN SOFTBALL SEASON OPENER
St. Margaret's first ever junior varsity softball squad, playing in its first game of the season, hit like big dogs in a marathon two-hour/ seven-inning contest versus Richmond's Collegiate School last Friday.March 27, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S CREW TEAM STRONG IN DEBUT
Their 1999 crew team, St. Margaret's first-ever, gave a successful debut performance in its first regatta of the season on Saturday, March 27 in Occoquan, VA.March 22, 1999: SMS SENIORS PRESENT INDEPENDENT STUDY PROJECTS
Twenty two St. Margaret's seniors participated in an independent study project (called ISP) during the school's minimester program, February 22 - March 5. This week, seniors are giving presentations on their ISP's hoping to inspire juniors to do likewise next year.March 1, 1999: TOM RHODES SHARES TALENTS WITH SMS, INSTRUCTS WOODWORKING COURSE

St. Margaret's 1998-99 varsity basketball team enjoyed a successful season and the varsity soccer team ran the tables on its competition to go undefeated ever since.February 18, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S WINS L.I.S. SOCCER TOURNAMENT
All season long, St. Margaret's varsity soccer squad has been the team to beat. The undefeated and number-one ranked Scotties emerged champions from last week's League of Independent School's (L.I.S.) Conference tournament with a 1 - 0 double overtime win over league foe St. Catherine's School.February 10, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S GEARS UP FOR MINIMESTER
Every February, to abate the wintertime doldrums and provide as many opportunities as possible for a well-rounded education, St. Margaret's School initiates a two-week minimester program for its faculty and students.February 9, 1999: VIRGINIA QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION HONORS SHELOR WITH AWARD
On February 6, sixteen year old Jamie Shelor was awarded the Bobbie Chafin Perpetual Sportsmanship Award at the 1998 Virginia Quarter Horse Association (VQHA) awards banquet at The Fort Magruder Inn in Williamsburg, VA.February 8, 1999: CYNTHIA WALKER NAMED VA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Cynthia Walker, a standout varsity volleyball student-athlete at St. Margaret's School has been named the 1998 Gatorade Circle of Champions Virginia High School Girls Volleyball Player of the Year.February 7, 1999: SMS LENDS USE OF BUILDING FOR FIRE DEPARTMENT TRAINING

The pressure of a long reign atop the League of Independent Schools (L.I.S.) Conference standings can build over the course of a season. You have to take it out on the little guy sometimes to prove you are worthy, and so it happened for St. Margaret's varsity soccer team last Friday, February 5 versus a league-last Trinity squad.January 28, 1999: SMS UNABLE TO SHAKE ST. ANNE'S-BELFIED, REMAINS UNDEFEATED
Still unbeaten in League of Independent Schools (L.I.S.) Conference play, St. Margaret's varsity soccer team battled through seventy minutes of scoreless soccer to tie a stubborn St. Anne's-Belfield (STAB) team last Thursday, January 28 in Charlottesville.January 25, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S HOSTS AUSTRALIAN EXCHANGE STUDENTS
This January, Principal Henry's vision became a reality. Sophomores Hilary Duffy and Adrienne Richards arrived in Tappahannock to spend three months studying at St. Margaret's School.January 22, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S WINS BIG OVER FOXCROFT

Kelly Proctor, Haden Halperin, Katie Challoner, Kate Deily, Ashley Davidson, and Truc Pham showcase their short 'do's' after recently donating the minimum requirement of 10" of hair to Locks of Love, a Fort Lauderdale-based non-profit organization which manufactures and distributes hair prosthetics to children who have developed medical hair loss.January 14, 1999: SCOTTIES POST LONG AWAITED WIN OVER ST. St. Margaret's varsity soccer center-forward and team tri-captain Elizabeth Sadler was quite familiar with her team's opponent last Wednesday, January 13th-St. Catherine's School in Richmond. Sadler, in her fifth varsity season since joining the team as an eighth grader in 1994 - 95, had never beaten St. Catherine's-until last Wednesday.January 12, 1999: ST. On Sunday, January 10th, ten St. Margaret's students, accompanied by two faculty sponsors, went to represent St. Margaret's School at the 1999 Winter Special Olympics held at Wintergreen Ski Resort.January 8, 1999: SMS VARSITY SOCCER SQUAD SHUTS OUT TRINITY
The St. Margaret's varsity soccer team, took command of last Thursday's game (January 7th) versus Trinity :05 minutes into the contest, following a series of six consecutive Trinity throw-ins.January 8, 1999: SOUNDS OF GERSHWIN COMING TO SMS JANUARY 19TH
The music of George Gershwin is coming to Tappahannock à la a husband and wife tandem team who will give a "one piano/four hands" performance of musical selections to celebrate the Gershwin centennial.January 6, 1999: ST. MARGARET'S HOLDS GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY
This past Wednesday, January 6th marked the groundbreaking event for a new facility at St. Margaret's School, The Community / Technology Center.December 18, 1998: SOUTHSIDE BANK / ST. MARGARET'S COAT DRIVE

St. Margaret's Glee Club, Ensemble, and Bell Choir enjoy the festive Christmas season performing at local churches; Ensemble to Sing at Governor's Mansion Christmas Open-House Event on December 11th.November 7, 1998: SMS FIELD HOCKEY TEAM HEADS TO STATE PLAYOFFS
As the top seed, SMS was the team to beat in last week's L.I.S. Division II tournament. The 1998-99 Scotties finished with a 10 -2 -1 record. SMS earned respect over the course of the season as the dominant team in the conference, winning the L.I.S. regular season title with a record of 7 - 1 - 1.November 6, 1998: ST. MARGARET'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM WINS CHAMPIONSHIP
St. Margaret's School (SMS) hosted the 1988-99 League of Independent Schools (L.I.S.) Volleyball tournament championships on November 3rd, 4th, and 6th. SMS overpowered Collegiate, winning by a 3 game - 0 margin, including a 15 - 0 shutout in the second game. The tournament victory clinched a perfect 15 - 0 conference season performance for the Scotties.October 10, 1998: ST. MARGARET'S SCHOOL ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN
In two evenings of kick-off festivities, St. Margaret's School announced "The Campaign for St. Margaret's School-Educating Young Women for Life in a New Century," a capital, annual support, and endowment campaign to raise $3 million.October 9, 1998: NEW TENNIS COURTS DEDICATED AT ST. MARGARET'S SCHOOL
St. Margaret’s School dedicates the Sheehan Tennis Courts, a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Dennis W. Sheehan of Tappahannock, VA, and their daughter, Catherine E. Sheehan of Washington, D.C.September 11, 1998: SCHOOL YEAR COMMENCES AT ST. MARGARET'S SCHOOL
St. Margaret's 77th year has opened with 150 students from 17 states, 12 countries and the six Virginia counties surrounding the campus.September 9, 1998: EIGHT JOIN ST. MARGARET'S SCHOOL FACULTY AND STAFF
