Help Your Daughter Succeed at SMS

After the lazy days of summer, returning to school life can be challenging for some students. Both new and returning parents can benefit from some words of wisdom that can help smooth this transition.

“The most important thing you can do now to help your daughter prepare for school is talk with her about budgeting her time,” said Joni Lawler, Parent Council Chair and mother of junior Anna Beth. “It’s easy for girls to become overwhelmed with all that is expected of them academically, physically, and socially. Make sure she is prepared to plan out her schedule so she gets the most out of her days.”

Other steps you can take now to help your daughter prepare for school include:

Set realistic and attainable goals. Whether it’s improving her academic performance or increasing her social network, your daughter will be more likely to accomplish her goals if she is clear about what they are. Talk with her about what she wants to accomplish this year and help her develop an action plan that will start her in the right direction.

Encourage her to pursue her interests. Students who get involved in areas that interest them will feel like part of a community more quickly than those who don’t. The sooner she does this, the easier her transition will be.

Help her become a self-advocate. Encourage your daughter to be comfortable approaching peer leaders and teachers. Doing so will help her feel more in control of her SMS experience.
