Honor Code: The Heart of the SMS Community

Part of living in a vibrant community is being able to trust your neighbor. That's why at St. Margaret's the Honor Code lies at the heart of who we are as a school.

Through the Honor Code, "St. Margaret's has created a well-bound community full of care, respect, and love," said Honor Council Head Ji Ye Kim '08 at the Honor Book signing held earlier this month. The honor code requires students not to lie, cheat, or steal and to be responsible for those in the community who do. In addition, it encourages students to serve as positive examples for each other, she continued.

Signing the honor book is more than simply a gesture. It is our students' opportunity to demonstrate, in a very real way, that they are willing to live within both the letter and the spirit of the Honor Code.

So how does the Honor Code appear in the daily lives of students at St. Margaret's? Here are just a few ways:

* Academic integrity: Students understand that even summarizing and changing an original author's words still requires them give credit to another person's ideas.

* Honesty, even when no one's looking:When students receive a pass to use a computer during study hall, they know that using personal e-mail or visiting non-academic related websites instead is a violation of the Honor Code.

* Security: Living within the Honor Code provides students with the security of being able to do things like leave their belongings unattended. Roommates understand that prior to borrowing each others property, they should always ask permission.

In addition to Kim, this year's Honor Council includes Corbin Brooks '09, Seh Young Kim '08, and Michka Sharpe '08. Seniors, juniors, and sophomores who have attended St. Margaret's for at least one year are eligible to serve on the Honor Council.
