SMS Students Win Academic Recognition

Several St. Margaret’s students received national recognition for their exceptional academic achievement in a number of national arenas. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized seniors Martha Reynolds, Stephanie Hanson and Katherine Burnett for their performance on the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Martha placed in the top 1% of more than 1.3 million students who took the test and was named a Merit Semifinalist. She now advances in the competition to compete for one of 8,200 merit scholarship awards offered by colleges and corporations.

Stephanie and Katherine placed in the top 3% of test-takers and were named Commended Students. They received Letters of Commendation in recognition of their academic promise.

In addition, the College Board recently cited four members of the St. Margaret’s Class of 2007 for their performance on Advanced Placement (AP) examinations. Ligon Brooks, Michelle Burch, Laura Gorham, and Chelsea Jacobs, were named AP Scholars for achieving grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

After graduating from St. Margaret’s, the four students went on to pursue rigorous studies at some of the country’s most competitive colleges. Ligon is now a first-year student at the College of William and Mary and Michelle at the University of Virginia. Laura studies at the University of South Carolina, and Chelsea at Virginia Tech.

Five years of dedicated study has paid off for school president and senior Hannah Kessler. She was recently awarded the 2007-2008 Outstanding Senior in French Award from the American Association of Teachers of French. This award is made annually to a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in the study of French as well as exceptional commitment to the French language and the many cultures where it is spoken.
