SMS Athletic Complex Dedicated

Head of School Margaret R. Broad, Board of Governors Chair Jill McCuan, Chaplain Candine Johnson, Athletic Director Sue Haney, and keynote speaker, Board of Governors member and Class of 1987 graduate Heather Wood Mantz stood surrounded by athletes, students, faculty, staff, and parents as the school community dedicated the new St. Margaret’s School athletic complex on October 12.

“Most people would give anything to feel like a god for one minute of their life,” Heather said quoting from the movie Hoosiers. “St. Margaret’s School gives you that opportunity whether it’s on this ‘field of dreams,’ on a stage, in a crew shell, or in the classroom.” [Listen to the entire speech]

The dedication of the complex was followed by the Ensemble’s singing of the national anthem to open the field hockey game against the Essex Trojans. The Scotties won 6-0.

Earlier this year, the Board of Governors unanimously approved the request to begin construction on the 42-acre property which the school purchased four years ago. Located on Sycamore Drive in Tappahannock, the complex is being developed in phases. It currently houses two playing fields, two softball diamonds, a cross-country track, and a faculty residence which is under construction.

While the property has not yet been officially named, SMS is beginning a comprehensive capital campaign in which fund-raising for the complex is a priority.
