“Some photographers teach the world through their images while others use the camera to learn about the world around them,” photojournalist Frank Delano told this year’s Images Minimester class.
Indeed, students in this class had the opportunity to do both by experimenting with digital imaging, black and white photography, and visual composition.
“The class was very insightful,” said Erica Dayton ’10. “It was interesting to hear about the life of a photojournalist. I’ve always had an interest in photography, and now that I know more about it, I can definitely see myself enjoying it as a life-long hobby.”
This is just one example of how this year’s Minimester classes gave students the opportunity to learn by doing. Teachers were also inspired by the experience. “This class was fruitful in both the art room and the photo lab,” said art teachers Konst and Konstantina Konstantinov who led the class. “The students showed a great deal of enthusiasm and were successfully introduced to the fundamentals of photography through a variety of dark room practices and discussions of different image aspects.” The class also covered topics such as images in fine art and music, and even body image.
Students in other Minimester classes had similar hands-on experiences. For example:
• It’s a Mystery to Me allowed students to try their hands at writing mystery novels and investigating a crime scene.
• Cultural Explorations adventurers sampled Ethiopian cuisine and learned Chinese calligraphy.
• Next Steps took rising seniors on a tour of colleges around the region and taught them strategies for taking the SAT.
Whether across the country or around the world, Minimester travel opportunities also serve to teach students in unique ways. Trips this year included community service in South Carolina, RV-ing through Nevada and California (see webpage for more details), sailing the high seas in the Bahamas, travel in Spain and Morocco, and senior ISPs.
