SMS Goes West During Minimester

This year’s Minimester road trip to California gave 18 students the opportunity to explore some of the nation’s most breathtaking natural landscapes and man made marvels. Here are excerpts from the online blog that chronicled life on the road with California Road Rules crew.

February 28: When we arrived at Hoover Dam we were all amazed! Although many can say this is just a very large dam located near Las Vegas, the true size is unimaginable until you see it with your own eyes.

February 29: Today was a long day. We got up early and drove a while to Sequoia National Park and went snowshoe hiking. It was actually really fun, but people kept falling. We also saw what were probably some raccoon tracks. The best part about snowshoe hiking was being in the snow, but it was still kind of warm outside. Those participating for the first time were surprised by the power of the experience.

March 1: Today, we went to Yosemite National Park and saw some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. We went on an exclusive photography tour and saw some of the most famous spots in Yosemite. Being able to see some of these things is almost like being in a movie. It is literally like the stuff you see on TV; you know, you never think you will see it in real life, but if you do, it’s absolutely AMAZING.

March 3: While soaking up the sun and looking out over the water, I was amazed at how different life can be. It has to be super nice to get up most days with the warm sun! It was so peaceful—I almost felt like I was away from the rest of the world. Everything seemed very slow here. Some people were out riding bikes; others were flying kites. It was wonderful to lay back and soak in a slower pace of life.

March 5: Today, we traveled to Ventura Harbor where we took a cruise to Anacapa Island in the Channel Islands National Park. We saw a pod of dolphin—about 1,500 of them—on the way. On the island, our guide, Aaron, gave a very worthwhile tour. We saw about a million seagulls which seem to be the dominant inhabitants. There were a lot of pelicans and some sea lions. Some of the girls finished the tour with an invigorating leap into the ocean.

March 7: Once we left the [RV] park we were not on the road long before we reached the beautiful Beverly Hills where we spent most of the day shopping. After we shopped for awhile we choose to go to where the stars were. It was very cool to see where the famous people go. All together today was a great day.
