ISPs Show SMS Students Have What It Takes

Independent Study Projects give seniors the opportunity to explore a broad range of career options related to their interests. This carefully planned time during Minimester allows seniors to either try something new or delve further into a topic they've previously explored.

Such was the case for senior Ellie Schneidman who did her ISP at the National Geographic Society in Washington, DC. What compelled me to do my ISP there was both my interest in photography and the organization's reputation as a leader in the industry, she said.

I took a photography class at SMS my sophomore year. Working for the Image Collection department at National Geographic Magazine gave me the chance to rejuvenate this interest.

Stepping off the St. Margaret's campus and into the working world helped Ellie appreciate the education she has received here. She recalled the moment on her third day of work when a fellow employee complemented me on my work ethic, which I can only attribute to St. Margaret's.

In addition to learning about photography, Ellie learned some interesting facts about herself. Joining the work world for two weeks opened my eyes and allowed me to further appreciate what I've been given at SMS. What I found was that I had all the tools to be successful in any career because I know what it means to adhere to deadlines and to follow through with projects.

This experience gave me the confidence that when I graduate, I will be ready for the real world because I have the knowledge that, in the words of Mrs. Farmer, prior planning prevents poor performance.
