A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus
Vol. 2, No. 5 Tappahannock, Virginia, January 2000
CAPTAIN'S CORNER
Dear St. Margaret's families and friends,
![]()
Epiphany. I have always loved the sound and meaning of this word, as well as the traditions associated with this day in the church calendar. Each year, when our school community reassembles after the long Christmas break, we gather for the first time in the chapel to celebrate this day with a longer Eucharist service and a longer message from our chaplain.
This year, as she spoke of the meaning of Christmas, the light that has come into our world, and the power that each of us has to share our own lights with those in our lives, I looked around our very full chapel and gave thanks for the opportunity to live and work among so many people engaged in bringing meaning into each other's lives.
I was reminded of my own epiphany in this same space 20 years ago, when Ben, then 3 ½ years old, and I attended our first chapel service together on my very first day at St. Margaret's School as a French teacher. This was how I described that day in the book I wrote for Ben as a 21st birthday gift.
How will I explain St. Margaret's? I knew this was where I belonged on the very first day, standing in the chapel, with you by my side. I knew immediately that being here was a gift to me and that here my gifts, as yet for me undefined, would be understood and appreciated.
Don't you think that the millennium fireworks exploding over my head in this photo look like an epiphany? Certainly spending that moment with David on a French speaking island we've grown to love translated that word well in light and love. I am happy to be able to bring the energy within these lights back to my work at St. Margaret's School.
Happy New Year!
Margaret R. Broad, Headmistress

THE CURRENT
Special Olympics celebrate achievement and service. St. Margaret's is honored to have been selected as one of two Virginia high schools to send volunteers to work with the Winter Special Olympics at Wintergreen. Each school selects volunteers from its highest honor society as these students have already demonstrated their ability to achieve at the highest levels while also providing service to their own communities.
Congratulations and sincere thanks to the members of our National Honor Society who participated this year: Katie Farmer, Heather Gilbert, Bo Hammond, Yin-Chin Hou, Jeong Minh Kim, Sarah Muller, Sara Pirtle, and Carver Weakley. Special thanks to their chaperones ViAnn Farmer and Sue Saunders.
Activities ranged from training athletes from beginners in "slide and glide" to slalom racing with experienced skiers. Our volunteers also organized games during rest times and chaperoned a dance. During the competition, our trainers served as coaches and cheerleaders. The two-day event concluded with awards ceremonies.
