A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus
Vol. 10, No. 7 Tappahannock, Virginia, February 2008
CAPTAIN'S CORNER
Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,
February – a light dusting of snow on the grass, quickly melted by the warm sun; the fragrance of roses and excited squeals filling St. Margaret’s Hall on Valentine’s Day; students enjoying a free afternoon in this interval between sports’ seasons. So many aspects of our program are coming to an end and the events scheduled to highlight student achievements punctuate our exam preparations. It is a month to look back, just a little, and turn our eyes and thoughts to all that awaits us.
As I said to the students this week, after the intensity these winter months, you will be stunned to realize that soon we will all be heading in very different directions: many seniors will focus beyond school and college during their independent study experiences; a large group of juniors will turn their attention to building a college list, preparing for their SAT tests, and getting a start on college applications during the Next Steps minimester course; adventurous travelers will move away to Spain and Morocco, the Bahamas, South Carolina, and the West Coast; closer to home students will spread out across the campus and the state to explore interests beyond the core curriculum. The one thing that each of us will realize is that we are not together!
There is plenty of togetherness in boarding school! By February 22nd, we will have enjoyed the second trimester Athletic Awards breakfast, the winter visual arts show and dance recital, and the winter play. We will also have completed second trimester exams and planned for the last third of the year. We’ll have had some fun, too, with the blue/grey hoops extravaganza, a Hawaiian luau complete with grass skirts and a chocolate volcano, and some wonderful conversations about what it means to live and learn together.
We will not be together again until after Easter, and how much we’ll have to share! I look forward to seeing the growth in each of our students and to focusing with them on their goals for the final months of this year and their remaining high school years. Just look at our cover article and you can see how quickly these years go by and how important each activity and each decision can be!
Sincerely,
Margaret R. Broad,
Head of School
