A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus

Vol. 11, No. 3 Tappahannock, Virginia, October 2008

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,

Margaret Robinson Broad - Head of School Leadership, at all its levels and in all its complexities, has filled my time and thoughts this month. I appreciate all the opportunities I have to learn, listen, share, encourage and plan. From the most visible to the almost invisible, each allows me to advance the mission of St. Margaret’s School or the leadership of others within and beyond our community. What does a month of leadership look like and who are my partners in this engaging enterprise?

In this photo taken after the all-school meeting on Fall Family Weekend, you see Katie Koestner with me. She speaks nationally and in the media on teen safety and provided an eye-opening look at cyber-smarts for our students and families.

This weekend, our Parent Council led the way in school-focused fundraising with a successful silent auction and their annual fall planning meeting for a year’s worth of activities.

Also with us were Alumnae Council leaders hosting a craft fair and the 10th annual river run. We were impressed with the number of mothers, fathers and siblings who joined our students!

At the beginning of the month, our 22 member Board of Governors came to campus and used their time to meet students, approve budgets, investigate national trends and affirm the goals of our 2006 strategic plan.

Every week, my fellow administrative cabinet members and I look at and beyond the day-to-day life of the school, making plans and decisions. Every day, I spend an hour with the senior peer leaders in class. This month we also enjoyed a weekend retreat on the Potomac to review our progress, the goals they have set for the year, and their own leadership roles and experiences.

All of these activities are both necessary and important, but I will admit that the one I completed just before writing these thoughts is the one that helps the others make sense for me. I’ve spent this sunny Sunday afternoon reading and responding to three weeks worth of journal entries from each of the 14 peer leaders. In their words, I read the climate of the community and the aspirations, frustrations and triumphs of these young women. In my words, I offer encouragement and opportunities for growth. We don’t know which of these young leaders will inspire the next school president, join the board or the alumnae council, or return as our career day speaker, but the joy is that time has already shown that one or more of them will!

Sincerely,
Margaret R. Broad,
Head of School
