School Programs Build Global Awareness

What do St. Margaret’s and Harvard University have in common? More than you think. Earlier this year, Harvard revised its undergraduate requirements to include an experience of other cultures–something that SMS has offered students for more than 10 years through both the International Program and exchanges with other members of the Queen Margaret of Scotland Girls’ School Association. “We’re preparing our students to live and work in a global society,” said Head of School Margaret R. Broad, “whether that means seeing America through the eyes of your Japanese roommate or finding the similarities between our school and one on the other side of the world.” This is the sixth year that SMS has taken part in a student exchange with St. Margaret’s School in Berwick, Australia. Tenth-graders Emma Gearon and Merys Williams arrived in Tappahannock in January for a 10-week stay. Sophomores Aubrey Sozer and Taylor Miller will attend school in Berwick over the summer. In March, 20 members of the SMS ensemble and treble choir will join 180 girls from 9 other Queen Margaret of Scotland schools in Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom for a 10-day choir tour of England and Scotland. |
