Area residents are invited to be the guests of St. Margaret's School students, faculty, and staff for "The Belle of Amherst," a one-woman play about American poet Emily Dickinson. The free public performance, sponsored by the SMS English Department, features actress Mary Wadkins. It will take place on Monday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m. in Ball Memorial Gymnasium on Water Lane.
"Cultural events are one of the best gifts that a school like SMS can give the community," said English teacher Shannon Spears. "We're pleased to share this event with our local friends and neighbors."
A Tony award-winning play, "The Belle of Amherst" has been performed to the acclaim of audiences worldwide. The production uses a skillful blend of letters, first-person accounts, and poems to bring to life the private world of the reclusive Dickinson. Emily Dickinson, universally regarded as one of the best American poets of any generation, lived from 1830 to 1886. Her more than 1,700 poems were discovered only after her death and since have become some of the most endearing verses in American literature.
