A 1954 graduate, Lay has been a member of the St. Margaret's School Board of Governors since 1998. She served on the committee that raised funds to build the Viola H. Woolfolk Learning Center, helped create the school's current strategic plan and led the alumnae association as its president for two terms, in 1973-1975 and 1982-1984.
"The St. Margaret's School Alumnae Association as we know it today was first envisioned by Mary Lloyd," said Head of School Margaret R. Broad. "Thanks in large part to her, the association is an invaluable partner in both friend- and fund-raising for the school."
Broad also cited her for serving as "a strong presence for St. Margaret's School in the Northern Neck," whether through her enthusiastic outreach to potential students and their families or her many civic activities. Lay is co-founder of The Dandelion in Irvington, an active member of the Garden Club of the Northern Neck and one of the driving forces behind the successful "Just Gardens" tour that benefits The Haven.
Lay lives in Kilmarnock with her husband, David. They are the parents of two grown children and one granddaughter. Two nieces, Sarah Pollard Chiffriller and K.C. Pollard, are St. Margaret's graduates. Lay's brother, Albert C. Pollard, Sr., serves on the school's Foundation Board.
