Local Enrollment Again High at SMS

Tappahannock (August 30, 2002) - St. Margaret's School opened Monday (September 2) with a full enrollment of 158 students from 17 states and 9 countries. Among them were 11 new day students from the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. They joined 33 local girls who re-enrolled for a tally of 44 - the maximum the school can accept in order to retain its small, 12-student classes and its low 6:1 student/teacher ratio.

"It was another excellent year for day student admission," said Assistant Head for External Affairs Kimberly McDowell. "We received early applications from a number of very strong candidates."

First-time local enrollees include a published poet, a forensics team member, two competitive equestriennes, and six other athletes. Five come from families where a relative attended St. Margaret's.

The new day students are: Michelle Burch, daughter of Michael Burch and Dr. Sheri Humme of Burgess; Michelle Chiles, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Chiles of Reedville; Jessica Crockett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Crockett of Irvington; Rebecca Dickinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fielding Dickinson of Loretto; and Cheryl Hinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Terry of Tappahannock.

Also: Alison McKeon, daughter of O'Connell McKeon and Kenneth McKeon of Urbanna; Alexandra Newman, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David Newman of Lancaster; Allison Ryan, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Ryan of Tappahannock; Julianna Sader, daughter of Alan Sader and Ann Chenoweth of St. Stephen's Church; Katie Saunders, daughter of Frank Saunders and Sue Saunders of Tappahannock; and Keri Straughan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Woodfin G. Straughan of Hague.

St. Margaret's is a boarding/day school for girls in grades 8-12 that was founded in 1921 by the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. Its mission, "Educating Young Women for Life," is reflected in a college preparatory curriculum and co-curricular activities that equip girls to face the technological, global, intellectual and societal challenges they will encounter in our rapidly changing world.

Local families who want to learn more about attending St. Margaret's School in 2003-2004 are encouraged to call the Admission Office at 445-3357 and request an invitation to the next Day Student Visit Day, which will be held on Friday, October 18.
