Contact: Jenni Brockman Phone: 804-443-3357 Fax: 804-443-6781 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tappahannock (August 29, 2003) - They may not sleep in the dorms, but there are still lots of ways that day students benefit by attending a boarding school like St. Margaret's.
"Boarding schools are different from even the most comprehensive day schools in that they provide a 24/7 environment for living and learning," said Assistant Head for External Affairs Kimberly McDowell. "Students and their families have access to resources that are hard to find elsewhere."Local parents with daughters in grades 7-11 can learn more at an October 14 luncheon featuring nationally known educator Carol Hotchkiss, who will describe those benefits and resources in a presentation titled "Learning Life Lessons Outside the Classroom." There is no charge for attending, but attendees are asked to make their reservations by October 7. Girls who will be entering grades 8-12 next year are invited to attend Day Student Visit Day on Friday, October 25. The program begins at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 1:30 p.m. Participants will be paired with current day students to attend classes, tour the campus, hear a student panel, and eat lunch. Registration by October 17 is required.
This year, 39 area residents are day students at St. Margaret's. They come from public and private middle schools in eight counties, including Essex, King and Queen, King William, Lancaster, Middlesex, Northumberland, Richmond and Westmoreland. Daily round-trip shuttle transportation is available from the Northern Neck.St. Margaret's is a 158-student boarding/day school for girls in grades 8-12 that was founded in 1921 by the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. Over the last five years, SMS has sent 9 students to the University of Virginia, and many others to such highly competitive colleges as Bryn Mawr, Carnegie Mellon, Emory, Johns Hopkins, Mount Holyoke, and William and Mary. Consistent with its mission and heritage, St. Margaret's actively seeks and admits qualified students of any race, color, religious affiliation, or national or ethnic origin, and encourages applications from those requesting need-based financial aid.
