Five St. Margaret’s students received recognition for their entries in the 2007 Literary Contest sponsored by the Woman’s Club of Essex County, including the top two prizes for poetry in their division.

Junior Martha Reynolds of Wake Forest, NC won first place for her poem entitled “Requiem for a Dream” in which she uses masculine rhyme to discuss issues of environmental concern. Reynolds’ poem will advance to the Lee District Art Show competition in March.

Judges awarded second place to sophomore Meghan Cooke, daughter of Keith Cooke of Tappahannock and Teresa Ballard of High Point, NC for her “Lost Laughter,” an emotional story of survival.

Sophomores Sarah Keating of Frederick, MD, Lucia Pulchiné of Warrenton, VA, and Siara Wright of Tualatin, OR won honorable mentions for their work. Keating’s sonnet, “Mary with Cancer,” lauds the bravery of a woman living with the disease, while Pulchiné and Wright explore issues of trust in relationships in their “Green Eyes” and “Paid Love’s Prices.”
