Winter athletes at St. Margaret’s School were honored for their hard work and dedication throughout the season at a breakfast recently. Senior Ligon Brooks, daughter of Jeff and Sara Brooks of Millers Tavern, was among the student-athletes who received awards for their outstanding achievement. She was voted most valuable member of the SMS varsity swim team.
In addition to Brooks, freshmen Frankie Berscak of Kitty Hawk, NC and Meghan Sisk of Richmond were recognized for their contributions to varsity swimming. Berscak was voted most improved swimmer and Coach Kay Brooks Carlton presented a coach’s award to Sisk in recognition of her team spirit.
The junior varsity basketball team selected sophomores Sarah McClellan of Orange as its most valuable player and Jessica Wu of Taiwan as most improved. Coach Larry Foulk presented a coach’s award to sophomore Lucia Pulchiné of Warrenton.
Award winners for the varsity basketball team were sophomore Crystal Thomas of Severn, MD, voted most valuable player and the team’s high scorer. Senior Bukola Omotade of Elmont, NY was named the team’s most improved player. Coach Laura Dusablon presented the coach’s award to senior Taylor Miller of Warrenton who, along with senior Wendy Powell of Upper Marlboro, MD, was also recognized for her dedication to the team over the past four years with a senior award.
The St. Margaret’s varsity track team which debuted this winter, voted sophomore Caroline Casey of Richmond as the most valuable runner and freshman Pepper Silliman of Montchanin, DE most improved. Coach Billy Turner recognized senior Maya Clark of Chapel Hill, NC with a coach’s award.
The banquet marked the end of the winter athletic season. Softball, soccer, tennis, crew, and golf teams have begun practicing in preparation for spring sports events. Varsity softball, coached by Terry and Sue Haney, has its first home game against Colonial Beach on Thursday, March 29, as does JV softball, coached by Gene McCarthy and his daughter Cameron McCarthy. Varsity soccer, coached by Laura Dusablon, JV soccer coached by Anna Jordan, and varsity tennis, coached by Faith Martin, begin their seasons the next day against Steward and Christchurch Schools, respectively.
Varsity crew, coached by Maren LaLiberty and Cupper Dickinson, starts the season at the Richmond Regatta on March 31 and varsity golf coached by David LaLiberty tees off against St. Gertrude on April 3. For schedules and directions to away events, visit our website at www.sms.org/sports
