While St. Margaret’s students were on break this summer, the campus was as busy as ever. Since mid-June, the St. Margaret’s campus has served as host to more than 1,000 participants in sports camps, educational programs, and private events. Last week marked the close of the summer season with the Paul VI High School of Fairfax, Virginia football team’s pre-season training camp.

“Our campus is a resource for the entire community and we are delighted to be able to share our beautiful facilities,” said SMS Chief Financial Officer Nancy Smith.

Outside groups have used St. Margaret’s facilities almost every week this summer. In addition to Paul VI, other organizations included the Virginia Resource-Use Education Council which conducted the Chesapeake Bay Coastal Academy water and science teacher training course; the Teachers on the Bay program; the American Soccer Academy; the Riverview Enrichment Camp operated by the Sidwell Friends School of Washington, DC; and the Commonwealth Soccer League of Richmond.

Earlier this summer the riverfront Community / Technology Center was the venue for a dinner which honored Lord Hanningfield of Essex, England and commemorated 400 years of history between the Essex counties of England and Virginia. In addition, a number of local families have taken advantage of St. Margaret’s attractive meeting and dining facilities to hold rehearsal dinners, weddings, and receptions and the space recently hosted an Essex High School class reunion.

“As our campus expands, we look forward to being more of a resource to the local and regional community,” said Head of School Margaret Broad regarding the addition of the new SMS athletic complex located on Sycamore Drive. The 42 acre property is currently under development and will be ready for use by mid-September.
