More than 300 St. Margaret’s School students, faculty, staff, parents, board members, neighbors, and
alumnae came together on October 12th, 2007 to officially dedicate the school’s new athletic complex.

Head of School Margaret R. Broad was joined by Chaplain Candine Johnson, Board Chair Jill McCuan, Athletic Director Sue Haney, and keynote speaker Heather Wood Mantz for the official dedication of the St. Margaret’s School athletic complex on October 12. Mantz, an athletic standout while at St. Margaret’s, also serves on the School’s Board of Governors and is a graduate of the Class of 1987.

“Most people would give anything to feel like a god for one minute of their life,” said Mantz, currently the Director of Environmental Affairs for the Virginia Port Authority, quoting from the movie Hoosiers. “St. Margaret’s School gives you that opportunity, whether it’s on this ‘field of dreams,’ on a stage, in a crew shell, or in the classroom.”

Earlier this year, the Board unanimously approved the request to begin construction on the 42-acre property which the school purchased four years ago. Located on Sycamore Drive in Tappahannock, the complex is being developed in phases. It currently houses two playing fields, two softball diamonds, a cross-country track, and a faculty residence.

Area contractors, suppliers, and professionals working on the project include The Contractor Yard, Essex Concrete, and Lowe’s, all of Tappahannock; Pritchard & Fallon of Callao; and S.R. Jones Construction of Montross.

The dedication was followed by the third and final field hockey game between the St. Margaret’s Scotties and the Essex Trojans. SMS won 6-0.
