Our Episcopal Identity
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:38-40
St. Margaret’s lives its Christian ministry because of the power of love—love of God, love of our girls and the families we serve, love of our extended community of alumnae and friends, and the love we feel as stewards of this beautiful place we call home.
The love of God motivates us to support and promote the education and holistic growth of girls from all backgrounds and faiths through moral, spiritual, intellectual, creative, physical, and social interaction.
Guided by Episcopal tenets that promote faith, reason and tradition, we help girls develop their personal integrity and nurture their healthy curiosity. We respect the dignity all people and encourage our community to serve others in meaningful ways. We provide a nurturing environment where uniqueness is celebrated and our diverse population feels safe to belong, believe, and become their best.
Exploring the mysteries of faith through chapel worship, community service or individual discovery in the classroom is a valued part of SMS life. Chapel programs include talks on the importance of building strong character, honor and integrity, being kind and not bullying, having an attitude of gratitude, the value of sisterhood, and more.
“We are companions in each girl’s exploration of her faith and seek to provide opportunities for studying, experiencing, and living the Gospel of Christ.”
-The Rev. Anita Braden, School Chaplain
"I wish for you strength to embrace your sister when the ground shakes and the sky darkens and she needs your help to face up to her responsibilities when she errs. And in return for you to be blessed with the same sense of the miraculous during your time here. And that you take with you the values you put into practice in small and miraculous ways every day."
From a chapel talk on the St. Margaret’s School Honor Code given by Keith Krusz P’16, Dean of Faculty.
